Meet DPS NSLI Phillip “Phil” Martin
In the world of aviation, stories often expand beyond the confines of cockpits and airports, embracing the human spirit of dedication, sacrifice, and familial legacy. 59-year old Phillip “Phil” Martin (Photo: Phil, right, completes his T-28 Checkride with former Delta Capt. Bill Rourke, left.), a seasoned aviator and Delta Professional Services NSLI, epitomizes this narrative of passion and commitment that is transcending generations.

Phil’s journey into the skies began as a young dreamer captivated by the allure of flight. In 1983, while still a senior in high school, he obtained his Private Pilot License, laying the foundation for a lifelong devotion to aviation. A graduate of Texas Tech University, Phil earned his degree in Business, all while supporting his aspiration to navigate the skies.
His career with Delta Air Lines reflects a range of experiences, starting from humble beginnings on the ramp in DFW in 1987. Phil’s path, however, diverged as he ventured into civilian and military aviation, piloting A-10s with the Air National Guard before returning to Delta in 1997.
For twenty-two years, Phil served as a steadfast presence in Delta’s cockpit, embracing roles from First Officer on the MD88 to Captain on the A220. However, a pivotal moment in 2020 necessitated a bittersweet sacrifice – bidding farewell to his career to prioritize fatherhood. Phil’s decision to embrace full-time fatherhood underscores the profound values that shape his character.
In January 2022, Phil embarked on a new chapter with Delta Professional Services. Transitioning from the cockpit to the classroom, he embraced the role of an instructor with unwavering enthusiasm. The bond within the A220 team quickly became a hallmark of Phil’s professional voyage, accentuating the rewarding nature of his newfound endeavor.
“I am so thankful and grateful for this opportunity at DPS. I don’t mean this to sound trite, but I really do work with the greatest group of people.” – Phillip Martin
Outside of work, Phil splits his time between volunteering at the Museum of Flight and spending time with his two twin sons, Jacob and James. Phil began volunteering at the museum in January 2023 where he gets to work with the plane that both his father and uncle flew in the Navy, the T-28. A rare picture of his dad instructing his uncle in a T-28B at Whiting Field now hangs in the same museum. From flying the T-28A Trojan at airshows to earning his Type Rating in the T-28B, Phil’s journey mirrors a poignant homage to his familial legacy.
In his free time, Phil enjoys skiing, jet skiing, and dirt biking with his sons who are also starting to follow in his aviation footsteps. His son James already has a Private License and is planning to begin the Flight Program at Liberty University. Jacob is currently attending KSU but will be transferring to Middle Georgia to attend a flying program. (Phil jokingly said he is gladly accepting donations!) In June, his boys will have the chance to parachute at Utah Beach for the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day Invasion.
Amidst the rigors of his career and the demands of fatherhood, Phil remains grounded in his commitment to community and service. His involvement with the Veteran BRG and contributions to the Museum of Flight underscore his unwavering dedication to preserving aviation history and honoring those who paved the way.
