Scaling Everest for a Cause: DPS Employee Brian O’Malley’s Journey to Honor First Responders
For most, climbing Mount Everest is an unimaginable challenge. For Brian O’Malley, a U.S. Navy veteran, and Delta Professional Services (DPS) employee, it’s more than just a test of endurance—it’s a mission. In 2025, Brian and his brother-in-law, Steve McDaniel (U.S. Air Force veteran and former police officer), will attempt to summit Everest to raise awareness and financial support for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (T2T).
Their motivation? Honoring military members and first responders who have made immense sacrifices.
The Drive to Climb
At an age when most people might start slowing down, Brian and Steve are pushing forward. Both in their sixties, they see Everest as the ultimate challenge—one that aligns with their lifelong belief in perseverance and service.
“I’ve always tried to challenge myself,” Brian says. “As I get older, I want to use my God-given talents to help others. That’s been the philosophy of my wife and me, and what we’ve tried to instill in our children and those around us.”
Their training is rigorous, but their mindset is clear: “Training for Life.” This mantra isn’t just about climbing; it’s about continually pushing limits, whether in the mountains, in service to others, or in daily life.
Why Tunnel to Towers?
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is dedicated to supporting first responders and military personnel who have suffered life-altering injuries or made the ultimate sacrifice. The organization helps pay mortgages for surviving families and builds smart homes for injured veterans, ensuring they can live with dignity and independence.
With deep personal connections to the military and first responder communities, Brian and Steve see this expedition as a way to give back. Their families—including spouses, children, and extended relatives—have served in these professions, making this cause especially close to their hearts.
The Journey Begins
The expedition is divided into two phases:
- Phase One (February-March 2025): A trek to Everest Base Camp, followed by the summit of Island Peak—a crucial test of their technical climbing skills.
- Phase Two (April-June 2025): If successful in Phase One, Brian will join an expedition team for the final push to Everest’s summit.
This journey is as much about raising awareness as it is about personal endurance. Brian and Steve humbly ask for prayers, encouragement, and support for T2T.
